Description

Madison Avenue Boutique Hotel in Affluent Carnegie Hill Neighborhood

You can imagine flappers, business tycoons, and World War II heroes making their way in and out of Hotel Wales, which resides in a preserved historical building on New York City's Upper East Side. Inside, the hotel is lined with marble-stepped staircases and ornately carved wrought-iron banisters, and there's a distinctly old-fashioned feel to the place. And if you head upstairs to the rooftop bar, you can look down to see the affluent neighborhood of Carnegie Hill, or peer west to see Central Park or south toward Manhattan's skyscrapers.

Hotel Wales is conveniently located near some of the city's most popular attractions, and you can explore a few of them with ticket options offered with this Groupon. If you choose the museum tickets, you can head to world-renowned art galleries such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the Neue Galerie New York, which is dedicated to German and Austrian art. Alternatively, you can watch tennis heavyweights such as Roger Federer and Serena Williams as they duke it out on the hard court at the US Open, the last of the four tennis majors (game availability varies).

The 10-story boutique hotel has 89 newly renovated guest rooms, all equipped with Belgian cotton linens and 100% goose-down duvets and pillows. The suites have decorative fireplaces and face Madison Avenue; some of the floors located higher up in the building have views of Central Park. Fluffy muffins, homemade jams, and other breakfast favorites are included in the breakfast spread each morning at Sarabeth’s; for dinner, head to Paola's, which serves fresh pasta dishes and unique desserts.

Manhattan’s Upper East Side: Tree-Lined Streets and Brownstones Create European-like Atmosphere

Carnegie Hill—which is named for the Carnegie Hill Mansion that resides here—is free of the skyscrapers and condo developments that have swept Manhattan’s other wealthy neighborhoods. Instead, brownstones sit side-by-side with neo-Gothic mansions along tree-lined avenues. Restaurants and coffeehouses also blend seamlessly into the streetscape. Located about 2 miles north of Midtown, Carnegie Hill is also an easy walk or train ride to some of the city’s biggest attractions such as Times Square and Rockefeller Center. But there are some interesting sites in the immediate neighborhood, too—enough to keep you occupied.

Just a few blocks away you'll find the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the shopping mecca Madison Avenue. And then there's Central Park, designed by legendary architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Head here to walk or pedal past the rolling meadows and bridges that span lakes adorned with lily pads. The Central Park Zoo is also contained here; don’t miss the daily sea lion feeding or the recently opened snow leopard habitat.
